About

January 27, 2022

Start Date
Curling will be starting again on the week of January 31, 2022, please see below for details!

Curling Fees
A regular season usually runs for 10 weeks and although we have been shut down for a while we are still planning for an 8 week half. Accordingly, membership dues for the second half are being reduced on a pro rata basis.  If you have paid for the full year you are ready to go but if you have not yet paid for the second half please contact Ron English at treasurer@norwoodcurling.ca and get your fees up to date.  As was the case with first half dues paid at the being of the year, we cannot offer refunds in the event of another government shutdown.

Protocols and Safety
All the protocols that were in place before the shutdown will continue to exist. You will need proof of vaccination and active screening upon entering the club. Masks on the ice are not required but certainly are welcome. Please remember to try and stay 6 feet apart while on the ice, it is easy to forget but we are asking everyone to try your utmost to be safe. If you are not feeling safe, speak up, speak to your convener and wear a mask. There will also be extra tables in the club room as we need to keep people 6 feet apart so everyone will have some extra space before and after the game.

We are asking everyone to please be respectful of the volunteers around you, be respectful of your fellow curlers. We all want to enjoy this season safely and we believe we can do that.

Icemaker Wanted

Any member who has an interest in this position should forward resumes and inquiries by email to treasurer@norwoodcurling.ca or by mail to Norwood Curling Club,  P.O. Box 149, Norwood, Ontario K0L-2V0

President Shift

At this time Derek Hatfield has stepped down as president but will remain as a director until end of season, Pat McGriskin will be the interim President. It should be noted that several positions will be open for vacancy so we are asking the community to step up when the Annual General Meeting occurs.

Waver forms and Covid protocols are on the policy page. Please review them and your convener will go over them with you on your first night of curling

October 22, 2021

Hi Everyone,

Curling is on and we are starting the week of November 1, 2021. There will be many details to this email so please take a moment to read it over. As always if you have questions contact an Executive member or just contact Derek. We are doing our best to make this whole year work. Please be gracious and patient with your Board and Executive members as well as the Conveners who are going well above the call this year to make things work.

  1. As noted in our previous email the warm weather has wreaked havoc on our system and although there was no Norwood Fair this year we still did not get to open early. We are starting at our regular time. Some equipment was damaged in the startup but has since been repaired or replaced.
  2. Open House is October 30th and 31st from 12pm to 4pm. All COVID protocols will be in place and if you want to get a feel for how things are, please show up and throw some rocks. We are still looking for a few volunteers to help out so if interested contact Jan Kajmowicz.
  3. Some Leagues still have some room for curlers, if you know someone on the fence give them a call and let’s fill those leagues.
  4. COVID and NCC Waivers, there are two here. You need to sign and have the submitted before you curl, no waiver, no curling. You can hand them in early at the Open House or bring them with you to your first night.
  5. COVID Protocols. This is the big one this year and we must follow the rules. The protocols will be posted to the website and shared on Facebook shortly as well as posted in the club. There are lots of little rules we need to follow but in doing so, this allows us to be safe and curl.  On your first night of curling we ask you to arrive early as your Convener will go over these rules. There is no way around these, the penalty is severe if we are caught and we want everyone safe.
  6. Spares will only be accepted from members this year. If you know someone that can curl once in a while and they just showed up and paid their $10, that is not allowed this time, they must be members of the club.
  7. Learn to Curl will happen the first two Sundays on a compressed schedule, November 7th and 14th from 12pm to 2pm. Cost is $20. If you are not already part of a league I urge you to sign up with one, none of us are experts =)

There are several rules but your convener will go over them with you. I honestly feel we can do this and will adapt.

October 11, 2021

Hello everyone,
If you haven’t already noticed it was 22 degrees Celsius today. This makes for some great summer activities but not so much for ice making. Our ice maker has informed us that it is much too warm for the ice to be created and it is simply melting so we will have to delay our opening by a bit. We do not know the exact timing but the Executive and Board are meeting next week to discuss and engage the ice maker. We are hoping this only delays us a week or two. This is affecting many other clubs in the area as well.
We will keep everyone informed as information becomes available, please be patient, we are going to curl this year.

September 24, 2021

The Board and Executive met the evening of the 23rd for almost 3 hours and had much to discuss. Next time you see one of these individuals please thank them as they are doing a lot of work this year to allow everyone to curl.

Yes, we are planning on opening mid October for the season. If you haven’t already registered please contact your convener or an executive member so you can be counted. There are some leagues with low numbers and we are working on making things work.

I can not stress this enough but the rules and protocols put down by the Province and Health Unit must be followed, no exceptions. The fines are substantial and it would jeopardize the entire club. Please bear with us as we start up the club again.

So this is good news, the style of play will be fairly close to normal with some exceptions. We will have much updating in the near future, so please stay tuned.

Derek

It is with a heavy heart we share the sudden passing of one of our dear members Angela Hook. Angela volunteered much of her time at the club anywhere help was needed, in the kitchen preparing meals, looking after 50/50 draws, etc. She will be missed by everyone she met. Sending our sincere condolences to her husband Brian and family. https://necrocanada.com/…/angela-barbara-hook…/amp/

Annual General Meeting is on Wednesday August 18, 2021, 7pm at the club. The Agenda will be forthcoming but you can expect Elections and COVID discussion.

Please be aware that current Public Health Guidelines will be in effect for the AGM i.e. mask, sanitizer and physical distancing.
